How much can you apply for?

The amount of grant aid for which you can apply depends on the size of the total budget that you think might be required for a complete advocacy project. We anticipate that most associations will bid for enough money to complete one stage of the 5 step approach to advocacy, though successful associations will be encouraged to apply for support to complete all the stages. There are also special rules for new and emerging associations.

The 5 Step Approach

Any advocacy project can be split into five steps. Details are available in the factsheet and a full explanation is provided in the Introduction to Advocacy workshop. It is hoped that applicants will want to pursue projects that require the completion of most or all of the stages. However, the Fund will only approve grants for one or possibly two stages at a time. BMOs successfully completing a stage will be encouraged to apply for support for the next stage. This means that BMOs only need to provide a detailed budget for one stage, but will need to have a broad idea of the total budget for all the stages for which support will ultimately be sought. Established and emerging associations

For the purpose of applying to the fund, there are two categories of business member organisation: established and emerging.

Established BMOs

Established BMOs may apply on the basis of total grant support for a complete project which is 'small' up to KES1m or 'large' up to KES3.5m.
For small grants, the fund will contribute up to 100 per cent of the eligible project costs; for large grants the fund will normally contribute up to 80 per cent of the eligible project costs.
It is anticipated that each step in the process will normally have a duration of three to six months and that a project covering all the stages in the five step approach should take not more than 12 months

Emerging BMOs

New and emerging associations are particularly encouraged to apply and are eligible for grants based on the expectation that the total budget for all five stages will be up to KES350,000.
We recognise that emerging organisations may have difficulty to preparing a compelling proposition, so they may also ask for a technical assistance grant of up to KES70,000 (inclusive of VAT) to help them prepare their detailed application.
Full details of grant availability are provided in the guidelines for applicants. Read & print guidelines
